TOWN OF NAVARINO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One man was killed and a woman suffered burns after a fire in a burn pit became out of control Thursday.
At 11:35 a.m., the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of Wildwood Road near Townline Road in the township of Navarino for a fire-related incident. When deputies arrived, they discovered “an active wildlife burning a large amount of acreage.”
A female caller with burn-related injuries met deputies on the scene and reported her husband was still in the area where the fire was active. Deputies were able to enter the area but found the male deceased. The woman was transported by ambulance to receive medical care.
Officials said the man and woman were burning brush in a burn pit when the fire spread and became out of control. Fire crews were called to the scene to contain the fire.
Shawano County Sheriff’s Office detectives are handling the death investigation portion of the incident. The Wisconsin DNR’s Forestry Division is handling the fire investigation side of the incident.
