FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Nearly four months after being critically wounded in the line of duty, Iro the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K9 deputy continues to make progress on his healing journey.
In a Facebook update posted Monday, Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt said Iro had a “big week” which included the removal of his leg brace. He has also been cleared to do physical therapy without wearing any cast or brace on his rear right leg.
His handler works with Iro seven days a week on specific rehabilitation exercises, and they travel to the UW Veterinary Hospital twice a week for additional rehab. He’s got a ways to go yet, but all signs are continuing in the right direction with his recovery. Thank you to all who continue to monitor and support his progress.
Waldschmidt added the Taycheedah Correctional Institution participated in two fundraisers to collect money for the K9 Program for Iro. He said staff ordered Cousin’s Subs and the population contributed through Faris Popcorn orders.
“We cannot thank our community enough for their generosity and support of Iro and our K9 fund,” Waldschmidt wrote.
Iro was seriously injured Oct. 14 during an exchange of gunfire between authorities and 33-year-old Kyle Massie, who was fatally shot. After receiving a lifesaving surgery, the K9 was released from the animal hospital and allowed to return home with his handler, Deputy Blaine Evans.
