Gene Meyer (OCSO)
APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A competency exam was ordered Tuesday for Gene Meyer, the suspect in the 1988 murder of Betty Rolf.
Meyer, 67, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the death of Rolf. Rolf’s body was found Nov. 7, 1988, in Grand Chute, just outside the Appleton city limits. Meyer was charged in December 2022 after DNA from the scene matched evidence taken from Meyer’s truck. The trial is scheduled to start April 1.
Competency refers to a defendant’s ability to understand court proceedings and assist in their own defense. It does not address his mental state at the time of the crime. If deemed not competent, the case would be placed on hold while psychiatric treatment continues.
If the review is completed, it may be addressed at a hearing already scheduled for Feb. 9. If not, Judge Mark Schroeder hopes it would be done for a Feb. 15 hearing.
