GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Outagamie County District Attorney says the death of a subject in a retail theft is no longer considered officer-involved.
On Jan. 3, authorities responded to the Fleet Farm store on W. Wisconsin Avenue in Grand Chute for a report of a retail theft in progress.
When officers approached the individual, officials say the person got in a vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed. The subject then lost control of the vehicle approximately two blocks away, collided with another vehicle, and crashed into a tree on N. Bluemound Drive.
Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the individual died at the scene. The two occupants of the collision vehicle were taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Per agency policy, the involved officer was placed on administrative leave. The DOJ said the officer’s squad car was equipped with a camera during the incident.
On Tuesday, Outagamie County District Attorney Mindy Tempelis determined the incident does not constitute an Officer-Involved Death as defined in Wis. Stat. 175.47(1)(c), and is therefore now considered a death investigation.
The name of the person who died was not released.
The investigation is ongoing.
