APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Federal regulators are proposing more than $281,000 in fines against an Appleton roofing contractor.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued four citations against Chilos Construction owner Bacilio Rios. According to OSHA, on July 7, inspectors observed three workers near the peak of an Appleton house and another operating a leaf blower on the roof, all without any form of fall protection.
The citations allege the company failed to provide fall protection or train employees on how to use it, improperly used ladders and failed to train workers on hazards related to falls and ladders.
“Fall hazards makes residential construction work among the nation’s most dangerous jobs,” OSHA Area Director Robert Bonack said in a statement. “Every employer has a legal obligation to provide a safe workplace. For roofing workers, proper safety equipment and training to recognize hazards and follow safety procedures can be a matter of life and death.”
Rios was issued similar citations in October 2022, and OSHA said he has not yet responded to those citations. Rios has 15 business days to respond to the latest set of citations.
