DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A 19th century shipwreck in Door County is now part of the National Register of Historic Places.
According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Sunshine, a scow schooner, sank in 1869. Winds pushed the vessel to its final resting place in North Bay near Liberty Grove.
The Sunshine was built in 1856 in Detroit. It spent the later parts of its career hauling lumber from northern Michigan to ports along Lake Michigan’s western shore.
The wreck was discovered in 2021 in shallow water. Shifting sands periodically cover and uncover the wreck. It sits upright and broken, still filled with most of its cargo of lumber.
