STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Bids are expected to be opened this week for the renovations of the Door County Granary, with plans to complete the project by next summer.
The former Tewles and Brandeis Grain Elevator was built in 1901. Plans call for it to be remodeled into an event space and agricultural museum.
Several recent government actions have moved the project forward, according to project manager Nicole Mattson.
“On September 27, the USDA Rural Development officially obligated the $3.3M in CDS funding to the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society Foundation for the Door County Granary project. On November 1, the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office gave their official concurrence of the design plans, a condition of the obligated funds. Last week, the USDA Rural Development agency reviewed final construction plans and approved the project going to bid. Bidding is expected to be opened this week with contracts expected to be awarded near the end of the year or early next year. A date for construction will be set when construction contracts are awarded,” said Mattson.
Sturgeon Bay’s Finance Committee is scheduled to review the development agreement Tuesday. If endorsed there and then approved by the City Council, it would extend the “substantial completion date” to July 31, 2024.
The building was added to the state Register of Historic Places in 2017, and the federal register in 2018.
