KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Students at a Kaukauna elementary school waited and saved all year to help make local veterans feel special.
Each year the students at Park Community Charter School play an important role in the community’s Veterans Day ceremony.
Throughout the year, students put coins into a jar. On Veteran’s Day, the money is donated to local veterans in need. The students also sing a song for the veterans, thanking them for their service.
Since Veterans Day falls on a weekend this year, the school held its own ceremony Tuesday so all the students could attend.
The yearly collection totaled to about $360.
Michael Weaver, senior vice commander of the VFW 3319 Kaukauna, says the gesture is heartwarming.
“It’s very emotional for us as veterans to see the younger generation thank us. Most of us are Vietnam veterans, we never received any thanks when we came home,” he said.
A community ceremony will be held on Saturday, Veterans Day, at Veterans Memorial Park in Kaukauna at 11 a.m.
