GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Another renovation project within the Green Bay Area Public School District (GBAPS) made possible by the passage of a referendum last year is officially underway.
Students, staff, district leaders and members of the community gathered Wednesday at Green Bay West High School for a groundbreaking ceremony at the site where the school’s new weight room will be built.
“It means a lot for the students here at West High School. It also means a lot for the stakeholders and the community members here,” said Principal Dexter McNabb. “We get a chance to showcase all the athletic services and what really goes on at West High School. I think that’s really, truly what West is all about.”
McNabb said the school’s current weight room has outgrown its space and is in need of upgrades to help raise the competitive bar for student-athletes.
GBAPS Superintendent Dr. Claude Tiller said additional renovations and improvements to be made at West High School include in the wrestling room, gym, locker rooms, auditorium and stadium, which Dr. Tiller added “will rival the best high school stadiums across the entire state.”
During the ceremony, West student-athletes explained how the new weight room will make an impact.
“Many of our students and the athletes here are so excited for this change and opportunity to come into West, so that they can use this as a way to improve themselves and compete against other schools and districts here,” said one student-athlete.
