GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Make sure to pay extra special attention to those school zones starting next week.
Not only are the kids getting ready for back to school, but so is the Green Bay Police Department.
“We’ll have officers at the schools saying ‘hi’ to the kids, and then a lot of our patrol units are going to be put around those schools to help watch the traffic patterns and make sure everyone is slowing down so the kids can get there safely,” said Patrol Captain Clint Beguhn with the Green Bay Police Department.
The speed limit in school zones in Wisconsin is 15 miles per hour. Consequences for driving faster than the speed limit are dependent on circumstances; but fines may range anywhere from $30-$600. In some situations, excessive speed in a school zone results in doubled fines.
Beghun also recommends that parents help their kids study their walking route beforehand.
“Have the parents go along with them beforehand, check those intersections and point out any possible dangers to the kids,” said Beghun. “We work really closely with the crossing guards in town, and they’ll be out at the intersections helping.”

The first day of school for most kids in the Green Bay Area Public School District is September 5.
