SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) — The nine-day gun deer hunting season in Wisconsin is set to kick off on Saturday morning, and with it will come half a million hunters taking to the trees.
They’ll be hunting a herd experts say could be as many as two million deer strong.
Jeff Pritzl with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it looks healthy.
“In general, there’s nothing that happened this past year that could be considered a setback,” said Pritzl.
The mating season was pushed back a little this year due to the mild weather earlier this month, which means there should be plenty of activity.
“The closer [mating] activity is to the gun season, the more deer sightings hunters report,” Pritzl said.
The season officially begins at daybreak on Saturday, which should be about 6:30.
