GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Most of the Porlier Pier – a former railroad bridge more than a century old – is structurally unsound and should be replaced, according to a new engineering report. Removing it entirely is also under consideration.
The City Council’s Park Committee is scheduled to discuss the discuss the matter soon. The agenda item describes it as “possible action on removing the Porlier Pier.”
The pier is at the base of Porlier Street, where it turns into Adams Street. It is adjacent to the Fox River Trail, on the east bank of the river. Most of the original railroad bridge, built in about 1900, was removed, and the current pedestrian pier was installed in 2005.
According to the 13-page structural report by AKRO Engineering: “The structural integrity of the pier is poor. 68% of the timber piles and bracing are failing or near failure. If the pier is to be salvaged, then significant rebuilding of the pile and bracing system must take place. The beams above the piles are in mostly good condition. The decking and railing should be replaced.”
The report says keeping the pier closed until repairs can be done is recommended.
“While the remaining material may provide enough strength for current pedestrian loads and normal conditions, there is significant risk of structural failure in the event of powerful storms or ice shoves,” the report says.
The preliminary scope of suggested repairs includes eight recommendations, including new piles and supports, new decking, and reinforcing retaining walls.
There is no cost estimate provided for doing the work.
The committee meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
