KIEL, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Just two people spoke Wednesday evening during a virtual Kiel School Board meeting during the community feedback portion of the agenda.
“Mrs. Lefeber do we know how many we have at this point in time,” asked school board member Dan Meyer.
“Two,” stated district Administrative Operations Manager Sheila Lefeber.
Meyer questioned that only two wanted to speak.
“That’s all we have? Ok,” said Meyer.
At one point, the number of people watching was over 280.
Before the meeting began, board member Dan Meyer said only those who reside in Kiel, own Kiel property, pay taxes in the town, or are Kiel area school district parents could speak.
The Kiel Police Chief recommending the meeting be virtual, citing vulgar, hateful, and disturbing comments received by members of the Kiel Area School District Staff.
This comes amid a Title IX complaint filed by the school district, accusing three students of sexual harassment for not using someone’s proper pronouns.
Kiel community member Sally Scrapinski says she appreciates the districts commitment to follow procedures of student safety, bullying and harassment.
“Everyone involved in this situation has a vested interest in the school and community. They may work here, have kids that attend school here, live here. They, I hope, all want to do what is right for the district and all students.”
Cary Johannes adds the district staff should be able to do their work, without being attacked.
“The goal of the investigation is to arrive at the truth of the situation. How can the district do that if they are being terrorized by death threats and bomb scares?”
No resolution or next step plans were announced after the meeting. The district will continue with virtual classes for the rest of the week.
