GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK)– While MLB teams won’t play ball come opening day, local minor league teams will.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will start its season on time.
“We think we’re going to have a great year, sort of getting past COVID. We had the lost season, and then we had an abbreviated season last year, so a full season, starting on time,” Wisconsin Timber Rattlers President and CEO Rob Zerjav said.
Zerjav says he thinks we may see more fans in the stands this year.
“I think people are going to flock here, and with no opening day down in Milwaukee, I’m getting the feeling a lot of people want to get their baseball fix, and they’re going to be coming out to our games,” Zerjav said.
Zerjav says the only players affected by the lockout are players on the 40-man roster for Major League Baseball.
Timber Rattlers players are at the High A level.
Opening day will remain the same for the Green Bay Rockers too.
“With all of our guys being summer collegiate athletes and college athletes from around the country coming in, they’re not getting paid to play, and we’re not affiliated with Major League Baseball in any single way. So that allows us to move forward,” Green Bay Rockers General Manager John Fanta said.
The Green Bay Rockers opening day is set for May 31.
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers opening day is on April 8.
