MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) — A federal grand jury has indicted four people in connection with what officials say was a wide ranging contract fraud scheme based in Brown County.
Now, 38-year-old Chad and 36-year-old Gina L. Schampers of De Pere along with 39-year-old Nathaniel Smith of Oconto and 33-year-old Jeffrey O’Brien of Shawano, the operators of Summit Contracting, are facing nine counts of wire fraud along with conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud.
They allegedly used their business to defraud customers of around $1,500,000 by persuading Summit’s customers to apply for high interest financing based on false information and sign forms which falsely stated that work on their remodeling projects had already been completed. Officials also say that defendants withdrew funds from customers’ finance accounts prior to performing any work or, in some cases, even prior to ordering the building supplies.
The US Attorney’s Office, FBI, and Brown County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a victim only meeting on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 5:30 PM. If you believe you are a victim of Summit Contracting, there is information available on the FBI’s website.
