GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Police say a domestic situation escalated into a standoff with an armed subject on Green Bay’s east side Thursday afternoon.
Police Captain Ben Allen told reporters around 1:40 p.m. that the situation had been resolved, and the area has reopened.
Allen says they were alerted to the incident when a family member escaped from the Clay Street home and had a neighbor call police.
“Once police arrived, we found out there was one male inside the house with some other family members. Those family members were able to get out of the house as well. And information was that the male was still in the house, and he was armed with a handgun,” Allen said.
The large police presence involved SWAT and negotiators. While a SWAT vehicle was spotted in front of the home, the teams were gearing up a block away.
It caused significant stir when a mass message was sent out by the police to many phones in Brown County urging residents in the area of Emilie Street and Clay Street on the city’s east side to shelter in their homes, in the basements if possible.
“Phone contact was eventually made with the male insdie the house and he was eventually taken into custody. He came out on his own free will and was taken into custody,” Allen said.
Residents in that area tell WTAQ that they heard officers asking people in a home to come out with their hands raised.
“People involved in this are certainly known to police. The male subject has an active felony warrant out for his arrest as well, along with whatever charges come out of this incident,” Allen said.
No injuries were reported, but police are still investigating exactly what happened in that disturbance.
