DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) – The I-41 Business Park in De Pere is seeing the beginnings of a new occupant, as Georgia-Pacific has begun construction on a 1.1 million square-foot distribution center.
The facility will warehouse and distribute products from several GP facilities, including tissue products such as toilet paper, napkins and paper towels from the company’s Green Bay Broadway mill.
“It’s designed to store and distribute lots of different Georgia Pacific products out to number of customers in the region,” said Public Affairs Manager, Mike Kawleski. “It could have just as well gone elsewhere in the Midwest, but it makes sense because one of GP’s largest operations is the Green Bay Broadway mill, which makes a lot of the products which will go into the warehouse in De Pere.”
Georgia-Pacific is investing more than $50 million in the new distribution center, which will feature 110 loading docks for trucks and capacity for more than two million cases of products. It will allow the company to consolidate the space it currently leases at four warehouses into one facility it owns.
“We’re not quite sure on the number of employees, although it looks like we will be using some of the same staff that are helping us and other warehouses,” Kawleski said. “Another thing that we’re still working out is how much automation will be in the new warehouse. That of course could affect whatever employee numbers we finally end up with.”
