(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) – GREEN BAY – Green Bay earned a huge 3-2 win against Youngstown State Sunday at Aldo Santaga Stadium, securing their spot at No. 2 in the Horizon League standings with 19 points. The Penguins sit third with 14 points, and Milwaukee leads the league with 24 points.
The victory improved Green Bay’s record to 11-1-3 overall and 6-1-1 in Horizon League action.
If the Phoenix can hang on to a top two spot in the Horizon League table, they will host a Horizon League Semifinal game at Aldo Santaga Stadium on November 11. The league’s No. 3 and 4 seeds will host HL Quarterfinal games on Nov. 7. There are three matches left for all teams in the Horizon League to decide postseason positions.
HEAD COACH MATT KAGAN
“We played a strong match today and scored three very good goals,” said head coach Matt Kagan. “I thought we were in complete control but made it a lot harder than it needed to be in the second half when they scored their second on a set piece. But credit to our group for fighting for 90 minutes to secure a massive three points in the Horizon League!”
HOW IT HAPPENED
The scoring got started in a hurry, as Green Bay got on the board when Ava Nielsen found Bella Brozek for a seventh-minute goal. Nielsen played a beautiful through ball into space, finding the feet of a wide-open Brozek, who beat the keeper for her third goal of the season.
The Penguins levelled the game just 38 seconds later on a goal from Elena Zuchowski, assisted by Camille Bultel and Kamryn Rosa.
Green Bay then went up 2-1 when a Phoenix corner kick was taken by Aixa Helbringer-Escobar, whose service found Grace Downey on the back post, who rose to head the ball to the back of the Penguins’ net in the 14th minute.
The Phoenix added insurance in the final minute of the half to make it a 3-1 lead with a 44th-minute goal from Laney Stark, her sixth goal of the season. Senah Hanes assisted the goal. A returning Hanes possessed the ball on the right side and found a streaking Stark, who trickled the ball past the YSU goalkeeper in the closing seconds of the half.
Youngstown St. narrowed the gap and made it a 3-2 game on Emma Berdiner’s goal in the 74th minute, assisted by Mia Deramo. The Penguins threatened late, but the Phoenix held on for the win, keeping themselves second in the Horizon League standings.
