(LEARFIELD) – The Milwaukee Brewers completed a critical series sweep of the Chicago Cubs with an 8-6 win at American Family Field in Milwaukee on Wednesday night, but not before things got too close for comfort.
Milwaukee led 8-1, but then saw the visitors score five times in the ninth before reliever Abner Uribe nailed down the win.
Jackson Chourio, William Contreras, and Christian Yelich homered as the Brewers built the big edge.
Yelich talked about the Brewers muscling up with 3 home runs.
Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a 3-run home run by Yelich off of Cubs starter Kevin Gausman.
Jackson Chourio maded it 4-0 in the second with a solo home run with William Contreras going deep in the same frame with a man aboard to make it 6-0.
Chourio maded it 7-0 in the third inning with a single with Contreras adding another run with a single in the sixth inning.
The Cubs scored 5 runs in the ninth inning to make it interesting with 4 of the runs coming off of Brandon Sproat and 1 off of Uribe.
Logan Henderson got the win, going 5 innings and allowing 1 unearned run on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 6.
Gausman took the loss for the Cubs.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said that he is proud of his guys.
Murphy said that his team was ready for this 3-game series.
Milwaukee now leads the National League Central Division by 10 games over Chicago.
In the race for the top seed in the National League playoffs, the Brewers with their 91-56 record have a 1 1/2 game lead over the LA Dodgers who are 89-57. Atlanta is next with a record of 85-61.
The team is off today and then hosts the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend.
