Two Rivers City Council votes 7-2 to end fluoride in city drinking water

TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two Rivers will stop adding fluoride to its municipal water supply after the City Council voted 7-2 to discontinue fluoridation.

Fluoride has been added to public drinking water in cities for decades as a way to help prevent tooth decay. Critics of fluoridation argue that high exposure to fluoride may be linked to developmental issues in children.

CDC guidelines recommend a fluoride level of 0.7 milligrams per liter of water, which is described as well below the threshold that would create a risk.

Council members who supported ending fluoridation said they believe the city should not force it on residents.
