(WIAC) – University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won the NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship following three days of competition at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex on May 23.
It is the fifth NCAA Division III championship in program history and 15th won by a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s outdoor track & field team. Since the 1982-83 academic year, WIAC institutions have combined to win 137 NCAA Division III team championships.
UW-La Crosse won this year’s title with 53 points to surpass the second-place total of 42 points by Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.). Johns Hopkins University (Md.) took third with 38 points, Calvin University (Mich.) fourth with 36 and Centre College (Ky.) fifth with 34.
UW-Eau Claire tied for seventh with 25 points, UW-Platteville tied for 18th with 16, UW-Stout tied for 32nd with eighth, UW-Whitewater tied for 48 with five and UW-Oshkosh tied for 67th with two. A total of 78 teams recorded at least one point at this year’s championship.
UW-La Crosse claimed one individual and two relays title enroute to the national championship. Maddy Habberstad won the pole vault with a height of 13-7 1/4 (4.15m). She is the first individual in program history to secure that national title in the event.
The Eagles’ 4×100-meter relay team of Julie Yang, Anika Reiland, Makenna Zak and Anna Paultz were victorious with a time of 45.57 seconds, while Plautz also was a member of the triumphant 4×400-meter relay squad that posted a time of 3:40.69. She was joined by Macy Reybrock, Zoe Lain and Andie Otto.
The following individuals from the WIAC earned All-America recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Athletes that finished in the top-8 of their respective individual events and as part of a relay team earned First Team All-America honors. Those who finished ninth through 16th individually and ninth through 12th as part of a relay team were named All-America Second Team.
