GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new painting is offering a visual show of support for survivors of sexual assault.
Wednesday marked the inaugural day of April and the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It also served as the kickoff to the annual “Paint the Town Teal” initiative, put on by the Victim Service Providers of Green Bay.
A large teal ribbon was painted outside the emergency room entrance of HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. It’s the first of dozens of teal ribbons that will be hand-painted across the community, honoring sexual assault survivors.
St. Vincent was aptly chosen as a site for the ribbon painting because of its 24/7 sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) program, which has been helping local victims for more than two decades.
“We want to keep the victim in mind in all of this. We’re trying to make this an easier situation for them. We want them to feel like they’ve been heard and we want to help them to get through it and to move on with their life,” said Dana Stueber, who leads the SANE program. “It really instills in us the reminder of what we’re doing this work for.”
