MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Republican Party of Wisconsin says it is filing a complaint over duplicate absentee ballots mailed in the city of Green Bay.
In a news conference last week, city clerk Celestine Jeffreys said 152 voters were sent two ballots for the April 7 election. She said absentee ballots were sent out around the same time major winter storms hit. Because of this, City Hall was closed an extra day, meaning the clerk’s office had to work quickly to get ballots sent out on time. Jeffreys said mailing labels were printed twice and ballots were sent out before anyone noticed the mistake.
In the same news conference, Jeffreys said the city would ensure votes are not counted twice by doing a daily audit of the returned ballots, followed by a ballot file audit.
In its complaint to the Wisconsin Elections Commission, the Republican Party alleges the city did not respond to its inquiry to explain how the error happened and how it would prevent the duplicate ballots from being counted.
The complaint asks the WEC to conduct an investigation into the error and order the city to provide a detailed written plan for tracking and handling any duplicate ballots. The complaint also asks the WEC to order corrective and remedial action to ensure the city complies with state law.
