APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Community Blood Center is issuing a CODE RED critical need for all blood types and platelets after winter storms forced multiple donor centers and blood drives to cancel.
CBC says it lost about 200 appointments in just one day with the potential to help hundreds of local hospital patients.
Blood collection may continue to be impacted if additional snow in the forecast contributes to more appointment cancellations.
About one in seven hospital patients need a blood transfusion to get through surgeries, cancer treatments, childbirth complications, life-threatening traumas and more. Just this past weekend, hospitals CBC supports needed at least 50 extra units of blood to help patients during emergencies.
“Winter storms can quickly disrupt blood donations, but local hospital patients still depend on generous donors every day,” said John Hagins, President & CEO, The Community Blood Center. “If you can safely travel, we encourage you to donate as soon as possible to help rebuild the blood supply for everyday care and unexpected traumas.”
Hazardous weather escalates an already urgent situation. Cold and flu season and spring vacations have and are expected to continue contributing to low appointments for weeks.
CBC is showing appreciation for selfless donors in many ways, including the Lifesaver Rewards program. All donors can join by opting in to earn points throughout the donation process. Points are redeemable for a $25 value gratitude gift, including virtual gift cards. Blood donors can earn a gift as often as every two donations. Platelet donors can earn a gift as often as nearly every donation.
Schedule a donation by visiting communityblood.org, using the CBC Donor App or calling (800) 280-4102.
