OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A string of “continued behavioral issues” during the evening hours at the Oshkosh Public Library has prompted a temporary check-in rule for unaccompanied minors.
As of Monday, unaccompanied minors using the library after 6:30 p.m. will be required to sign in at a greeter station and show their student ID, state-issued ID, driver’s license or library card.
The new rule is a result of “a recent increase in evening incidents involving teens who have repeatedly broken the library’s behavior policy.”
Officials say many young people use the library responsibly, but these disruptions are affecting the library experience for other patrons and placing a strain on staff members.
“We want the library to remain a space where everyone feels safe. By asking that minors be accompanied by a parent or guardian after 6:30 p.m., we’re promoting a safer space for young people while also supporting library staff and the community,” said Library Director Darryl Eschete in a news release.
Library staff anticipate the measure will not continue past the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Signs regarding the new policy are posted on the library’s main entrance doors and information will be shared on the library’s Facebook page.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss the new guidelines with their children. Exceptions will be made for library programs or outside events that specifically permit unaccompanied minors.
