GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A Green Bay student at St. Mark Lutheran School has won in her category for a national handwriting competition.
The Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest attracts approximately 80,000 participants annually.
Third grade student Zoey Lanier took first place in the Nicholas Maxim section of the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest; which is reserved for students with cognitive, intellectual, physical, and/or developmental disabilities.
All contestants wrote the sentence “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” because it includes the entire alphabet. Judges selected winners for each level based on the shape, size, spacing, and slant of the letters.
Zoey spoke about what she paid extra special attention to.
“The size and the shape; and I practiced at home a lot,” said Zoey. “I like to write; it’s my favorite thing!”
Nicholas Maxim winners are selected from a national pool of submissions, and only two winners, one for manuscript and one for cursive, are recognized each year. Zoey’s entry was written in manuscript.
Zoey’s teacher, Bridget Biebert, said she wasn’t surprised at all that Zoey won.
“She is just, I’m going to cry, she is one of the hardest working students I’ve ever met,” said a proud Biebert. “She really has overcome to much, and the joy she still has it just amazing.”
Zoey says her favorite thing to write about is her dogs Lisa, Nugget, and Peach.
