(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) COLLEGE PARK, Md. -The Green Bay womenโs basketball team came up short in an 81-67 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Phoenix finishes the 2024-25 season with a 29-6 overall record. GB had four players score in double figures, led by Maddy Schreiberโs 14 points in 21 minutes of action off the bench. Cassie Schiltz added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Natalie McNeal chipped with 12 points and three steals.
Alabama moves to the second round behind 23 points from Aaliyah Nye and 22 points from Zaay Green. Karly Weathers added another 10 points for the Crimson Tide.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Green and White jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Bama ripped off a 10-6 run, capped off by a bucket from Weathers. Alabama extended its lead to 17-11, but the Phoenix responded with a pair of buckets from Schreiber and another layup by McNeal, pulling to within two at 19-17 after the opening frame. The Crimson Tide began the second stanza by extending its lead back to six at 25-19 after driving the lane on three straight possessions. Green Bay wouldnโt let down, eventually making it a one-point game (27-28) after Jenna Guyer splashed a triple. Leading into the halftime break, Alabama had another run in them, ending the second quarter on a 10-2 run. The Crimson Tide led 38-29 at intermission after Aaliyah Nye made three free throws seconds before the buzzer.

Green Bay started the second half with a three from Bailey Butler, and Jasmine Kondrakiewicz took a charge on the defensive end to give GB more momentum. The Phoenix went cold again and were 4-for-17 overall during the second quarter through the middle part of the third period. Green Bay was able to get the offense going in the later part of the third quarter, finishing 5-for-10 to end the frame. However, Bama stayed sharp as well as the Phoenix faced a 58-47 deficit entering the last 10 minutes. GBโs offense stayed hot to begin the fourth period, getting an immediate layup from Schiltz before Butler nailed another three to get Green Bay to within five (59-54) with 7:17 left. The teams traded blows, and Green Bay stayed within nine after Callie Genke hit a shot from beyond the arc with 4:23 remaining. GB went cold once again, going nearly four minutes without a score as Alabama pulled away, and Green Bayโs season ended with an 81-67 loss.
