(WLUK) — Sunday marking the final day of the 16-day-long sturgeon spearing season for the Lake Winnebago system.
A total of 943 fish were harvested across the Lake Winnebago and Upriver Lake systems throughout the seasons, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
“More than twice what was harvested last year. While water clarity was difficult, many were able to persevere,” the DNR says.
Sunday, spearers on Lake Winnebago closed out the season with 47 sturgeon speared; 7 juvenile females, 16 adult females, and 24 males.
The total number of sturgeon speared in Lake Winnebago in 2025 was 617; 95 of which were juvenile females, 273 were adult females and 249 were males.
The Upriver Lakes closed the season with another slow day, with just 11 sturgeon speared; 2 juvenile females, 1 adult female, and 8 males.
The total number of sturgeon speared in the Upriver Lakes in 2025 was 326; 47 of which were juvenile females, 49 were adult females and 230 were males.
“Although no harvest caps were reached for the Winnebago System this year, 142 juvenile females, 322 adult females, and 479 males were harvested, and the 90-99% harvest trigger was met for the Upriver Lakes today on the final day,” the DNR says.
Sunday saw two more sturgeon over 100 pounds speared. “Bringing the total to 63 for the season, or just about 6% of the total harvest. That is incredible,” the daily harvest update report says.
