(WTAQ-WLUK) — Sturgeon spearing continued to be slow on the Winnebago system Thursday as the 2025 season enters its final weekend.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports 27 fish were speared Thursday. On Lake Winnebago, there were 12 adult females, 11 males and four juvenile females. On upriver lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts, there were three males, one adult female and one juvenile female.
The closest spearers are to any harvest cap is males on the upriver lakes. Another 14 males speared there would reach 90% of the cap, triggering a season closure the following day.
All of the harvest caps on Lake Winnebago remain well out of reach given the season pace so far.
On Friday, the Pipe, North Winnebago and Winneconne registration stations will remain closed.
Spearing ends Sunday unless harvest caps are met sooner.
The largest fish of the day was a 109.7-pound, 75.5-inch female speared by Patrick Nolan.
