(WTAQ-WLUK) — The midweek lull in sturgeon spearing continued Wednesday.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reported 36 total sturgeon speared on the Winnebago system. Of those, 31 were speared on Lake Winnebago: 18 adult females, nine males and four juvenile females.
On upriver lakes Winneconne, Poygan and Butte des Morts, five fish were taken. Four of those were males and the other was an adult female.
DNR officials say Wednesdays typically have the lowest registration numbers of the week, although Tuesday saw fewer sturgeon speared.
With a maximum of four days left to go in the season, spearers inched toward harvest caps. The closest is males on the upriver lakes, where spearers are at 83% of the cap of 250. Spearing ends Sunday unless harvest caps are met sooner.
Three fish speared Wednesday weighed in at more than 100 pounds, with two of those being registered at Neenah. The biggest was a 150.1-pound, 78.5-inch female speared by Keith Kerstner.
Looking ahead to Thursday, the Pipe, North Winnebago and Winneconne registration stations will remain closed.
