CALUMET COUNTY (WLUK) — A new warning for anglers heading to Lake Winnebago on Sunday for sturgeon spearing as officials say a major crack in the ice has developed, causing ‘multiple vehicles’ to fall into the water.
The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office says the crack is just south of Faro Springs Road and runs from east to west.
It comes just hours after the opening day of sturgeon spearing season came to a close.
“Please use extreme caution if you choose to venture out onto the lake and remember, no ice is 100% safe,” the post says.
Officials with the DNR warned of the unpredictability of the ice after they say four people have drowned after their UTVs have fallen through the ice on area lakes, including Lake Winnebago.
DNR officials and Calumet County Sheriff’s Office advise anglers to check with local fishing clubs before heading onto any of the lakes, as the fishing clubs monitor ice conditions.
