APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Appleton Police Department says it was not involved in the arrest and deportation of a single mother, despite a social media claim.
The department posted on Facebook Wednesday that it reviewed its calls for service during the time frame claimed in the post and established that the incident did not happen.
In the post, Appleton police wrote:
(I)t has never been the authority of the Appleton Police Department, or any other local agency, to investigate or enforce federal immigration law violations. It is unfortunate to see individuals have chosen to use the uncertainty to amplify fear and mistrust.
We serve all people, regardless of their immigration status. As law enforcement officers, we do not routinely inquire about a person’s immigration status or detain or arrest individuals solely for suspected violations of immigration laws as we have no jurisdiction in this regard.
Police also warned people to stay vigilant when sending money or donations, as comments on the original post suggested sending money to the mother.
