SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Shawano County residents will have the chance to offer input on a proposed $20 wheel tax at special meeting now scheduled for Feb. 20.
Last month, the County Board debated adding the wheel tax – which is paid as part of the vehicle registration process – in order to raise $747,000 for road repairs. Collection would start Jan. 1, 2026.
However, after concerns were raised, supervisors agreed to hold a special public comment session.
That meeting agenda was posted this week. It will be Thursday, Feb. 20, at 3:30 p.m. in Shawano County Room A/B, 311 N. Main Street. No vote is expected to be taken at the meeting.
While no counties in Northeast Wisconsin have a wheel tax, 13 of the state’s 72 counties do have one. 38 municipalities in the state also have one.
The city of Shawano added a $40 wheel tax fee last year. If the county approves its new fee, city residents would pay an extra $60 per year, on top of the state’s $85 annual vehicle registration fee.
