(UW ATHLETICS) DULUTH, Minn. – Junior Laila Edwards and senior Sarah Wozniewicz scored goals in the third period to lift the No. 1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 6 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.
The comeback win for the Badgers (27-1-2, 21-1-2 WCHA) extends UW’s unbeaten run to 16 games.
The Bulldogs (15-11-2, 10-10-2 WCHA) scored with two and a half minutes left in the first period to give them a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Badgers outshot Minnesota Duluth 13-4 in the second period but couldn’t crack Bulldog netminder Ève Gascon and the game went into the third period with a 1-0 UMD lead.
Edwards finally broke through the Bulldogs defense six minutes into the third period before Wozniewicz added a goal five minutes later to give UW the 2-1 victory.
Ava McNaughton made 25 saves to earn her 26th victory in net this year.
Notes of the Game
- Edwards tallied her 26th goal of the season, which paces the team and ranks first in the country. She also is one point away from matching her point total of 56 set last year
- Wisconsin outshot UMD 48-26, marking the 23rd time this year UW has outshot its opponent.
- UW ends the weekend with 65 points in the WCHA standings and are 17 points ahead of both Minnesota and Ohio State, who are in second place with 48 points.
