MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It’s been eight months since classes, taught exclusively in-person at the UW-Green Bay Marinette branch campus, ended.
Marinette County residents continue to wonder what will come of the 36-acre campus.
As the months have gone by since in-person-only classes halted, a local non-profit group called the Association for Community and Culture (ACC) was formed last year, with its initial focus being the future of the campus.
The ACC plans on working together with the county board to provide input on the campus.
“Really, trying to gather all those ideas and then again, put them through some kind of a filter to see what might be viable options. And just really want to support the county and be a great partner,” said ACC Vice Chair, Paula Gruszynski.
UW-Green Bay has maintained a presence in Marinette, particularly focusing on the theatre on campus — which is a valued asset among community members.
“It really is the heart of the community. It is amazing once you start talking to people, how many people graduated from there or how many people have gone every year to theatre productions,” said Gruszynski. “So, we really didn’t want to lose it as some kind of a cultural and community touchpoint.”
The buildings on campus are owned by Marinette County, which has a lease agreement with UWGB that ends in 2042.
That agreement could be terminated earlier if both sides agree.
Some with the ACC would like to see the location continue to provide educational resources.
“Some kind of educational, artistic purpose. That concept,” said Gruszynski.
UW-Green Bay says its Foundation is planning to have a conversation with the ACC.
University leadership has also indicated they will be meeting with Marinette County in a few weeks.
