FRIENDSHIP, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A 14-year-old boy was struck and killed in Fond du Lac County after an argument within his vehicle spilled onto the side of the highway.
The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-41 near Winnebago Street, in the town of Friendship, just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
According to authorities, the driver stopped on the median side of the interstate, while still partially in the lane of traffic, due to an argument occurring within the vehicle.
Two adults — a 59-year-old driver and a 31-year-old male passenger — were in the front seat of the vehicle. Two teenagers — a 15-year-old female and a 14-year-old male — were the rear passengers.
After the vehicle pulled over, some of the occupants — all of whom reside in Detroit, Michigan — got out of the vehicle to “continue the argument” on the side of I-41.
Then, the 14-year-old got out of the vehicle “and stepped into the lane of the traffic.” He was hit by another southbound vehicle, driven by a 20-year-old Wauwatosa man.
I-41 was closed for approximately 4.5 hours.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says it is continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash and the Wauwatosa man is cooperating.
