(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Marquette University women’s basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 67-54 road win at Providence on Wednesday at Alumni Hall.
The Golden Eagles (12-6, 4-3 BIG EAST) were led by Skylar Forbes, who had 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting and sat the whole second quarter because of foul trouble. Forbes finished with four boards, two assists and two steals.
Jaidynn Mason added 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Halle Vice had 13 points and ten rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
Marquette had the largest lead of the first half when the Golden Eagles were up six early in the second quarter and went into the break down one.
The Golden Eagles used a 25-11 third quarter to start pulling away and led by 13 heading into the fourth, 52-39. MU shot 68.8 percent from the floor, the highest shooting percentage in the third quarter this season. Skylar Forbes (10 points) and Lee Volker (six points) combined for 16 of MU’s 25.
The Friars got the game to within seven points early in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 15 in the final minutes.
Providence (9-13, 2-7 BIG EAST) was led by Mackayla Scarlett, who had 15 points and five rebounds.
NOTABLES:
- Marquette has taken the last 15 meetings over Providence, tied for the longest win streak against a conference opponent. MU has won the last 15 meetings over Xavier.
- Marquette third win of the season when trailing at halftime.
- Halle Vice second double-double in the last three games.
