(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) ANGOLA, Ind. — The Lawrence University men’s hockey team rallied Friday but came up just short in a 4-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association setback to No. 7 Trine University at Thunder Ice Arena.
Lawrence had trailed 3-0 before scoring a pair of goals, including one late with an extra attacker on the ice. Trine got an empty-net goal to seal the victory with just 15 seconds left.
Trine (13-2-1, 7-1-1 NCHA) pushed its lead to 3-0 with a goal just 32 seconds into the second period.
Lawrence (3-10-2, 2-6-1) sliced into the lead when Jayden Jensen scored off assists from Carter Cloutier and Jack Michels at the 13:52 mark of the second.
The Vikings pulled goaltender Nolan Mahaffey late in the third period, and Cloutier immediately cashed in. He scored with 1:35 remaining, less than 10 seconds after Mahaffey had left the ice. Michels picked up his second assist of the night, and Will Crull also grabbed an assist as Lawrence trimmed the margin to 3-2.
After Lawrence won the ensuing faceoff, the Vikings again pulled Mahaffey from the net. Trine’s Tyler Fox got the empty-net goal in the final seconds for the final margin.
Mahaffey made 41 saves for the Vikings, and Cristian Wong-Ramos stopped 10 shots for Trine.
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday.
