GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Officials confirmed that the Green Bay Public Market will not be complete in time for the 2025 NFL Draft.
The redevelopment of Old Fort Square at 211 N. Broadway into the Green Bay Public Market was first announced in January 2022, with plans to open sometime in 2023.
When that targeted opening became unattainable, plans shifted to have the project complete in March 2025, just in time for Titletown to host the NFL Draft April 24-26.
However, due to the project’s many layers and complexities, it turns out the market will still be an active construction site during the draft.
“The public market is just a very difficult and challenging project. I mean, if it were easy, we’d already have one,” said Brian Johnson, president/CEO of On Broadway, Inc.
“We, of course, wanted to have something, at least in some capacity, ready for the draft. The reality is, just based on construction schedules and timing, that’s just looking like something that’s not going to be very practical,” Johnson said.
We’re still on a good path to get that project open on a timeline when it’s appropriate. But as far as its ability to interact with the draft, unfortunately, we’re just not going to be able to make it.
Johnson said he’s confident that Green Bay will still have plenty for locals and guests to do and see during the big three-day event, even without involvement from the Green Bay Public Market.
“Green Bay still has so much more to offer and we know that when visitors come here, they’re going to have a great experience visiting all of the different things that we have here in our community that our residents get to experience every single day,” said Johnson.
The $12+ million project is expected to attract more than one million visitors to downtown Green Bay each year. Initial plans call for at least 20 vendors and year-round access to fresh produce and goods.
