FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Fond du Lac police are stressing the importance of gun safety after responding to two accidental discharges of firearms in under 40 hours.
“While I am relieved that the injuries sustained in the incidents were not life-threatening, these serve as a reminder of the importance of firearm safety. Firearm safety is non-negotiable. Accidental discharges, particularly when handling or cleaning firearms can result in serious consequences. By following essential fundamental rules of firearms safety like treating every firearm as if it’s loaded, keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, and keeping your finger off the trigger will prevent avoidable accidents, said chief Aaron Goldstein.
The first incident was on Sunday around 6:43 p.m. in the 1000 block of Mihill Avenue. It was reported a 20-year-old Van Dyne man had shot himself in the hand with a handgun. The man was visiting with family and had recently disassembled the handgun and in the process of putting it back together, he had inserted a magazine unknown to the loaded and shot himself in the hand. Police found a bullet hole in the interior kitchen wall which traveled to an exterior wall, which absorbed the bullet.
The second incident happened around 12:17 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Grove Street. It was reported a 27-year-old Fond du Lac man failed to remove the magazine while he was preparing to clear a handgun for storage and fired a round through his bedroom wall. The man was on the second floor of the residence and the bullet exited the exterior wall. Officers were unable to observe any damage to the house next door.
No bystanders were injured in either incident.
