(ST NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A cold stretch at the end of the first half ultimately led to defeat for St. Norbert College, which dropped a 68-52 decision to Calvin University in a non-conference game at Van Noord Arena.
St. Norbert (9-3) trailed 11-4 nine minutes into the game and later had a 14-6 deficit with 9:36 left in the first half. The Green Knights then went on a 13-2 run, keyed by 3-pointers by Brandt Wilson, Connor Pytleski and Cole Uhlenbrauck, the last putting the visitor ahead 19-16 with 6:08 left. Calvin then went on a 19-1 run the last 4:17 of the half to take a 33-20 lead at intermission.
Calvin would maintain a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
St. Norbert shot 32.2 percent (19-for-59) from the floor. Wilson led the Green Knights with 13 points, while Pytleski added 11 points and five rebounds.
Calvin shot 45.8 percent (22-for-48) from the floor. Owen Varnado had a game-high 17 points for the Knights.
Men’s hockey
STEVENS POINT – St. Norbert College faced a two-goal deficit for the third consecutive game and couldn’t stem the tide as the Green Knights fell 4-1 to UW-Stevens Point in a non-conference game at K.B. Willett Arena.
The Green Knights (12-3) surrendered two goals 33 seconds apart in the first period. Dawson Sciarrino and Fletcher Anderson scored for the Pointers at 13:15 and 13:48, respectively. Those goals held up for a 2-0 Stevens Point lead at first intermission.
Stevens Point pushed ahead 3-0 on a Nico Chmelevski score at 10:18 of the second period. The Green Knights would score on an unassisted power-play goal by Jack Christen at 14:54, but the Pointers immediately responded with a goal by Peyton Hart at 15:57.
St. Norbert outshot Stevens Point 14-7 in the third period but couldn’t cut into the deficit and suffered its third-straight loss.
The Green Knights outshot the Pointers 35-27. Hunter Garvey made 23 saves for St. Norbert, while Alex Proctor turned away 34 shots for Stevens Point.
St. Norbert was 1-for-5 on the power play, while Stevens Point was 0-for-2
