GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Rumors are swirling online that the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers will meet in Ireland for a game sometime next season.
However, Packers officials on Tuesday told FOX 11 the first-of-its-kind international matchup has not yet been confirmed.
Citing team sources, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported over the weekend the Steelers “are expecting to play a regular season game in Ireland in 2025.” Sports Illustrated said Monday, according to a source, the Steelers’ opponent will be the Packers.
It comes after the Irish Examiner reported last month Dublin’s Croke Park would host a game, featuring the Steelers, in September 2025.
FOX 11 reached out to the Packers for more information and we received the following statement:
We’ve seen the reports but haven’t seen any official announcements by the NFL. We’ll refer to the NFL, since they make announcements about the schedule.
Green Bay is paired with the AFC North and NFC East for its schedule next year, meaning a game against the Steelers is certain. In their report about the rumored game in Dublin, Sports Illustrated said Pittsburgh would operate as the home team, while it would be designated as an away matchup for the Packers.
If the rumors are true, this wouldn’t be the first time the Steelers have played in Ireland. Dublin hosted the preseason American Bowl in 1997 between Pittsburgh and the Chicago Bears.
In October, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was quoted as saying, “I know the Steelers really wanna go there. I have no doubt that we’re going to be playing in Ireland. I don’t know if it will be next year, but it’s coming soon.”
The NFL is slated to have up to eight international games during the 2025 season, and it has been widely reported that one would be held in Ireland for the first time in the regular season.
Green Bay opened their 2024 season in Brazil, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo in the league’s inaugural game in South America. The Packers are 0-2 in their international matches, having also lost to the New York Giants in London in 2022.
