KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The dreary weather is putting a damper on fun outdoor activities over Christmas break.
Winter Park Ski Area near Kewaunee is temporarily closed, and the popular recreation site won’t reopen until weather conditions improve.
For those in the winter recreation business, Friday’s forecast was not what many wanted to hear.
“I woke up early. I heard rain, and I’m like ugh! I was hoping it would be light rain. You always hope it’s not going to rain heavy, but yeah, it was kind of a bummer,” said Dave Myers, Kewaunee County Parks Director.
Myers made the call to close the tubing hill early Friday morning. He says Winter Park Ski Area was off to an early start, with a busy weekend before Christmas.
“I think Sunday, we had just shy of 400 people tubing at the park for the day. We had hours of 10-4, so really good. We were open yesterday. Yesterday was pretty busy even with kind of the cruddy weather that we had with the fog and kind of drizzle. I think we had over 300 people yesterday,” he said.
Myers says the ski hill area remains closed as well.
“We made a good amount of snow there. We did not groom it out yet, because we saw rain coming. So we kind of left that sit. So we got some good piles, but we still have a lot more to make on the ski hill to get that open for the season,” he said.
Myers says any changes will be updated on Kewaunee County’s social media sites. In the meantime, officials have to wait.
“Right now, it looks like later next week, we have some cooler temperatures in the forecast. Hopefully that sticks around. So we’ll start snow making again. And some natural snow would be great. And if it would stop raining out, that would be even better,” said Myers.
