GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Three individuals have been identified as those behind two reported school shooting threats at Green Bay East and West High Schools.
Green Bay police spoke with the individuals and determined not to be any ongoing threat to schools at this time.
“The investigation goes back and forth pretty much all day long, until they were able to specifically figure out exactly what was said and what actually happened, so we’re confident now that there’s no credible threat,” said Lt. Jena Luberda with the Green Bay Police Department.
Police credit a student, who heard about the threat for coming forward.
“It caused them to speak with their parent and then their parent made the call to call us, which is absolutely the right call. We want, anytime someone hears this, we want them to call us immediately and then let us dig into the circumstances around the threat and the investigation that goes with it,” added Luberda.
The potential of threats led the district and police to increase security at both buildings.
According to East High School freshman, Alex Hood, “I was thinking, ‘Well, do I want to stay home or not? Because I really wasn’t sure, because there’s a lot of stuff happening now. Stuff like that actually happens.”
“I think that we’re all a little scared. There’s only half of the school here, so I think everybody is just a little scared right now about all that’s happening,” added sophomore Karly Miller.
The district said only about half of the students at West High showed up for school and attendance at East was believed to be about 60%.
Miller said, “We just had to go to our classes right away during passing time and not be stopping in the hallway talking to each other, so just going right to our classroom right away pretty much.”
While police believe they’ve gotten to the bottom of the potential threat, they said incidents like this are a good reminder of the see something say something concept.
Luberda added, “I hope that parents take this as an opportunity to speak to their kids, that even joking around, something as simple as goofing around about it or talking about this school shooter, every time we get something that is a potential or kids talking about it, goofing around about it we look into that and the consequences could be devastating academically and criminally.”
Authorities are still trying to determine if the three juveniles will face charges.
