(ST NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) DE PERE – St. Norbert College made light work of Concordia University Chicago, pushing the Cougars aside 71-48 in a Northern Collegiate Athletics Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.
The Green Knights (6-1, 4-0 NACC) scored 42 points in the second half after a slow first half. Despite a slow start, St. Norbert still held a double-digit lead at the half.
Both teams traded early leads, but the Green Knights were the first to break away in the first half as they went on a 8-0 run with Brandt Wilson, Garrett Grzesk and Will Stuckey (pictured) finding work in the paint. St. Norbert held its own on defense in the final 10 minutes of the half, with the Cougars not scoring any points in the last five minutes of the half. Connor Pytleski gave St. Norbert its biggest lead of at the end of the period, with the Green Knights leading 29-16 at the break.
While Stuckey and Grzesk continued to find success in the paint to open the second half, the Green Knights were able to get to the free throw line often, with 21 makes coming in the period. Jamison Nickolai proved to be lethal from the spot, as he found eight of his 14 points from the charity stripe.
A massive 12-0 spanning three minutes put the Green Knights up by 23, as Concordia Chicago struggled to keep pace with the Green Knights.
11 Green Knights scored in the game, including substitutes Derek Shaw and Brendan Powers, with Shaw netting five points in the final two minutes.
St. Norbert shot 40.7 percent (22-for-54) from the floor. At the free throw line, the Green Knights shot 92.6 percent (25-for-27).
Nickolai once again led the way for St. Norbert with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Aiden Harrington and Wilson both had eight points. Wilson finished one field goal and one rebound shy of a double-double performance, grabbing nine boards.
Concordia Chicago shot 29 percent (18-for-62) from the floor, having only seven makes in the first half. Joel Watts led the Cougars with 10 points.
Women’s basketball
UW-Stevens Point 64, St. Norbert 46
DE PERE – St. Norbert College fell to defeat to UW-Stevens Point 64-46 in a non-conference game at Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.
The Green Knights (6-2) held the Pointers at bay in the first half but fell behind after a large Stevens Point run in the third quarter.
After falling behind 6-0 to open the first quarter, Rose Hahn (pictured) and Emma Morrisey hit two back-to-back three pointers to tie the game after four minutes. Another three from Hahn gave the Green Knights their first lead of the game, but with a 7-2 run to end the second half from the Pointers, the visitors held a five-point lead after ten minutes.
The Green Knights held the Pointers to just 15.38 percent in the second quarter but could only find six points themselves going into halftime.
Stevens Point went on a 12-4 run to open the second half and would take its biggest lead of the day with a 13-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Green Knights were able to cut the lead to 11 but could not bring themselves any closer to the lead.
St. Norbert shot 35.6 percent (16-for-45) from the floor. The Green Knights were slightly outrebounded by the Pointers, 34-32. Taylor Thiry led the Green Knights with 13 points, while Hahn had eight. Morrisey and Kalina Winslow both had seven points.
Stevens Point shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) from the field. Alexa Thompson led the Pointers with 17 points.
