(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) PISCATAWAY, N.J. –The Marquette University women’s basketball team rallied from being down 14 to beat Rutgers, 59-57, on Friday afternoon at the Battle of the Banks in Piscataway, New Jersey.
The Golden Eagles (3-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) were led by Skylar Forbes, who had a career-high 23 points, six rebounds and two steals. Lee Volker tied her career-high in points with 18 and added seven rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Rutgers led by as many as 14 in the third quarter and MU cut the deficit to four headed to the final frame. Marquette took its first lead since the first quarter when Kennedi Perkins made a layup with 7:24 left in the fourth to make it 46-45 Golden Eagles.
There were seven lead changes and four ties in the last seven minutes and nine seconds of game action. Rutgers regained the lead with 2:07 left before a Lee Volker three at the 1:23 mark tied it up. Skylar Forbes hit two free throws with 44 seconds remaining to give MU the lead they would protect.
Rutgers (4-3, 0-0 Big Ten) was led by Kiyomi McMiller, who had 19 points and seven boards. Destiny Adams (21.7 points per game) was held to just eight points.
NOTABLES:
- First win against Rutgers in program history. MU was 0-11 coming into the game.
- Lee Volker hit a career-high tying two three-pointers.
- Marquette shot a season-low 21.9 percent in the first half, but shot 48.3 percent in the final 20 minutes of the game.
- First win this season trailing at halftime.
