(WNFL) – Michael Thiede scored on a 2-yard run with 3:29 left in the game and Cole Martin kicked the extra point which proved to be the game-winning point in Slinger’s 31-30 win over Rice Lake in the WIAA Division 2 state championship football game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.
Rice Lake had taken a 30-24 lead with more than 9 minutes left in the game on Lucas Peters’ 3-yard touchdown run; however, Grant Pacholke was turned back on the 2-point conversion attempt leaving Slinger in position to go for the win.
Thiede led Slinger, passing for 181 yards while completing 12-of-15 passes. He also rushed for 48 yards.
Kobe Hendricks added 44 yards rushing while Santos Rodriguez rushed for 43.
Rice Lake was led by Connor Durand who ran for 123 yards on 14 carries. Peters ran for 82 yards on 22 carries while Jakob Kunz gained 61 yards on 5 carries.
The title is Slinger’s first. Their most recent appearance was in 1998.
Rice Lake had won state titles in 2 of the last 3 seasons.
