(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s basketball team battled back late Wednesday to grab a 79-73 nonconference victory over Lakeland University at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence trailed by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings went on a key 10-2 run to reel in the Muskies.
Charlotte Brennan led Lawrence (2-2) and all scorers with 17 points as she went 3-for-6 from the floor and 11-for-15 from the foul line. Brennan added four rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks.
Olivia Kesti came off the bench to score 14 points for the Vikings as she went 6-for-10 from the floor. She also added three rebounds and three steals. Mallory Meyer added 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals for Lawrence.
A.T. Bartlett led Lakeland (2-3) with 15 points.
Lawrence trailed 58-49 when Caroline Sharpe buried a 3-pointer to start a scoring outburst. Kesti then followed with another 3-pointer to trim the lead to 58-55 with 7:14 remaining. After Jenna Caterino countered with a basket for the Muskies, Brennan scored on a driving layup to cut the margin to 60-57. After a Lakeland miss, Kesti’s layup finished the scoring run and cut the lead to 60-59.
The Muskies built the lead back to four at 65-61, but they couldn’t shake Lawrence. Free throws from Maggie Culver and Brennan trimmed the margin to 71-70 with 2:15 remaining, and Lakeland turned it over on its next possession.
Culver finally gave Lawrence a 72-71 lead on a shot in the paint with 1:37 remaining. The teams traded turnovers and Brennan came up with a steal and was fouled. She converted one free throw, and Lakeland missed a 3-pointer on its next possession. Brennan was fouled again and hit both foul shots for a 75-71 lead with just 38 seconds remaining.
Lakeland countered with a pair of Caterino free throws, but the shot clock was now off and the Muskies were forced to foul. Brennan was fouled with 17 seconds left and made both free throws for a 77-73 lead. After another Lakeland miss, Brennan tacked on two more free throws for the final margin.
Lawrence is back in action at home on Friday when the Vikings host Rockford University.
WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 92, LAWRENCE 67
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team hung with No. 15 Wisconsin Lutheran College for a half on Wednesday, but the Warriors pulled away for a 92-67 nonconference victory at Alexander Gymnasium.
Despite trailing 13-0 to start the game, Lawrence battled back against a veteran squad that features four graduate students, including All-American Ryan Broeckel.
Casey Schoenecker came off the bench to lead Lawrence (1-4) with 17 points as he hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor. Schoenecker added five rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
Landon Key went 7-for-9 from the floor for the Vikings on his way to 15 points, and he added four rebounds and a block. Rookie Nolan Koch added nine points for Lawrence as he went 4-for-4 from the floor.
After the Warriors’ fast start, Lawrence countered with a 16-7 run of its own to trim the lead to 20-16. Lawrence couldn’t pull any closer, and Wisconsin Lutheran (4-0) led 38-30 at the half.
Broeckel, who didn’t score in the first half, took over after the break for the Warriors. He scored 18 points in the second half and finished with a double-double as he grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Jacob Stoltz led Wisconsin Lutheran with 22 points but shot just 9-of-22 from the floor.
Wisconsin Lutheran opened up the lead to 11 points early in the second half, but Schoenecker scored on a layup and Key drilled a 3-pointer to cut the lead back to 47-41. The Warriors scored the game’s next seven points and slowly grew the margin from that point.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings travel to Martin Luther College.
