APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The former principal at Xavier High School in Appleton had a job offer to work at St. Mary’s Catholic School, in Neenah, rescinded after a complaint was filed against him with the Diocese of Green Bay.
Xavier High School families learned last week, in a letter from St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System Interim President, Katie Heim, that principal Mike Mauthe was terminated.
The letter sent to Xavier families said, “a complaint was received by the Green Bay Diocese Safe Environment Office, which then opened an investigation. As a result, Mr. Mike Mauthe is no longer employed by St. Francis Xavier High School. Because this is a personnel matter, no additional details can be provided.”
The Diocese of Green Bay said working with Xavier High School leadership, the matter was turned over to local authorities for further investigation.
Appleton Police say they have opened an investigation but couldn’t comment.
A Facebook group called “We Stand with Mike Mauthe!” was formed a few days after Mauthe was fired and it has since garnered more than 200 members. In that group, a letter Mauthe penned on his personal Facebook page was shared.
In that letter, Mauthe said he accepted the school’s decision to terminate him and urged students and families to do the same. He also admitted to making mistakes during his career and said he is willing to accept the consequences.
