STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) โ Members served by the Boys & Girls Club of Door County were the recipients of a big surprise Thursday.
AT&T and Human-I-T teamed up with the Boys & Girls Club to gift 100 free, refurbished laptops to students who lack access to technology and devices for school and homework.
โWe are committed to ensuring every child has access to the tools, resources and support so they can be successful, and todayโs event is one step toward even further closing the digital divide that affects a lot of Door County families,โ said Johanna Wicklund, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Bay & Lakes Region.
Although the Boys & Girls Club provides students with access to technology and the internet, Wicklund said club leaders realized the need extends beyond its doors.
โSo much of the schoolwork and learning takes place online these days,โ she said. โGiving every family a laptop to have access to technology at home is going to be transformational for Door County youth and families, giving them access to a new learning resource that will help them be more successful in school and prepare them for life.โ
Wicklund hopes this laptop giveaway helps close the digital divide and level the playing field for students served by the Boys & Girls Club of Door County.
Giving kids their own devices to access learning, school work, socialize and unlock the potential for whatโs available online is one way that weโre changing lives today, so weโre just excited for this opportunity.
Itโs estimated that 10% of Wisconsin households do not have access to the internet or connected devices to fully participate in the online world.
